How much time do you need at Mendenhall?

About two hours on the ground is enough to see Mendenhall Glacier properly: Photo Point, the walk to Nugget Falls and the Steep Creek boardwalk. Add about 30 minutes each way by road, or about 1.5 hours each way by city bus. Here is what fits in shorter and longer visits, and how to build the day around a ship.

Time is the real currency of a Mendenhall Glacier visit. The glacier is about 12 miles from downtown Juneau and the cruise docks, the sights are spread along a lakeshore, and most visitors arrive with a fixed time to be back on board. The tours on this site differ less in what you see than in how many minutes they give you to see it.

This guide sets out how long each part of the visit takes, per the trail descriptions and tour listings, then shows how the whale-watching combinations fit into a port day. Use it to decide between a quick look and the full walk to the falls.

The quick answer

Plan about two hours on the ground for Photo Point, Nugget Falls and Steep Creek, plus about 30 minutes each way by road. With 45 minutes, you have time for the visitor center and Photo Point but not a comfortable walk to Nugget Falls, which takes about 45 minutes round trip on its own. Tours that combine the glacier with whale watching take 4 to 5 hours in total. By city bus, allow about 1.5 hours each way.

How much time do you need at Mendenhall Glacier?

About two hours at the glacier covers the main sights at an easy pace. Less than an hour means choosing between the visitor center and the falls.

The table shows what fits in different amounts of time on the ground. The waterfall tour's 2 hours 15 minutes of free time is the benchmark: its listing names Nugget Falls, the visitor center and the Steep Creek boardwalk for that window. To see how the tours compare on this, read the best Mendenhall Glacier tour.

How far is Mendenhall Glacier from the cruise port?

About 12 miles. By road that is about 30 minutes; by city bus plus the walk from the stop, about 1.5 hours each way.

A private shuttle covers the road in about 30 minutes from its stand by the Mount Roberts Tramway. Capital Transit routes 3, 4 and 8 take about an hour to Dredge Lake Road, then it is about 1.5 miles on foot to the visitor center. The full comparison of bus, shuttle and taxi is in visiting Mendenhall Glacier without a tour.

How do you plan around your ship's departure time?

Work backward from the time you must be on board, keep a margin, and choose the visit that fits inside what is left.

  • Take the time you must be back on board and subtract a margin you are comfortable with.
  • Subtract the travel: about an hour round trip by shuttle or about three hours by city bus.
  • What remains is your time on the ground. Under an hour means Photo Point and the visitor center; two hours or more brings in Nugget Falls.
  • With a tour, the operator sets the return. Compare the tour length with your hours ashore and leave a buffer either side.

On Sundays the last city bus back from Dredge Lake Road leaves at about 5:25 pm, which can matter on an evening departure.

Let the tour keep the clock: 5 hours with whales first and 2 h 15 min at the glacier.

Is 45 minutes at Mendenhall Glacier enough?

For a first look, yes. It covers the visitor center and Photo Point, but leaves no slack for Nugget Falls.

The whale watching and glacier day trip gives 45 minutes of free time at the glacier, then a 2-hour whale-watching boat with a naturalist, in about 4.5 hours. Its listing mentions the visitor center, Nugget Falls or the East Glacier Loop as options. Since the falls walk alone takes about 45 minutes round trip, most visitors on this tour will be happier with Photo Point and the visitor center.

That trade-off suits a short port call where whales are the main event and the glacier is the scenic stop.

What can you see in two hours at the glacier?

The full classic visit: the lakeside view at Photo Point, the trail to Nugget Falls and the salmon stream at Steep Creek.

Start at the visitor center if it is open: exhibits, a 15-minute film and rangers to answer questions; opening times change with the season. Then take the short Photo Point Trail. Halfway along, the Nugget Falls Trail branches off for 0.8 miles across the lake flats. Finish at the Steep Creek boardwalk, where sockeye spawn in season and black bears come to feed.

In salmon season, the ground-level parts of the Steep Creek Trail close to reduce encounters between bears and people, while the elevated platforms stay open. The walk itself is covered in the Nugget Falls Trail guide.

How long are the glacier and whale-watching tours?

Between 4 and 5 hours in total. The difference is how that time splits between the boat and the glacier.

The waterfall and whale tour takes 5 hours and gives 2 hours 15 minutes at the glacier. The glacier and whale watching tour takes 4 hours, with self-guided time at the visitor center and Steep Creek; its listing says the Nugget Falls hike is not included. The day trip takes 4.5 hours with 45 minutes at the glacier.

The canoe tour takes about 4 hours and the ice adventure about 5. The canoe paddle and hike is the longest at about 5.5 hours.

Is there a shorter way to see the glacier?

Yes. The e-bike tour and the private road trip each take about 3 hours and show you the glacier along the way.

The e-bike tour is a guided, pedal-assisted ride with rainforest and glacier views for up to 8 people. Its meeting point is in the Mendenhall Valley, and the listing does not include a transfer from the docks, so plan that leg yourself. The private road trip picks you up, and in three hours shows your group three views of the glacier along with the Macaulay salmon hatchery, eagle stops and the Shrine of St. Therese.

What should you check before the day?

Visitor center hours, the visitor center fee, your bus times if you go alone, and the cancellation window of your tour.

Visitor center hours vary by season, so check the Forest Service page. The visitor center fee, a small seasonal charge for those 16 and up, is covered by some tours, so check the listing. Most tours here offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before, but the canoe paddle and hike allows it up to 15 days before. Pack rain gear whatever the forecast.
